NRDC Action Fund Endorses John Cavanaugh for Congress

Cavanaugh has been a leader in bringing climate groups, labor, and Republicans together to pass legislation that protects Nebraska’s natural resources.

Omaha, NE – Today the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) Action Fund endorsed John Cavanaugh in the race for NE-02.

“John Cavanaugh has demonstrated he can work across the aisle to lower energy costs and make life more affordable for Nebraskans. He is a champion for increasing access to cleaner and cheaper forms of energy, for cleaner air and safer water,” said Jed Ober, managing director of the NRDC Action Fund. “We are looking forward to working with John in Congress, and the NRDC Action Fund is proud to endorse him."

“I’m grateful for the endorsement of the NRDC Action Fund,” said State Senator John Cavanaugh. "Trump is giving Big Oil companies deal after deal while energy and utility prices rise. His policies mean we pay more for energy while our air gets dirtier and polluters get richer. I’ve fought against politicians that raise energy prices and pollute our communities here in Omaha, and I’ll do the same in Congress.”

Cavanaugh has been a leader on environmental issues in the Nebraska legislature. In 2024, Sen. Cavanaugh led opposition to a bill (LB399) that would have killed the renewable energy industry in Nebraska. Through his opposition on the floor and careful negotiation, the provisions that would have stopped renewable energy projects in Nebraska were removed from the bill.

NRDC Action Fund joins the Sierra Club in their support of Cavanaugh. In addition to being the only candidate in NE-02 who is supported by environmental groups, Cavanaugh has the support of anti-corruption organization End Citizens United, the Congressional Progressive Caucus, and the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare. He is also endorsed by eight labor unions.

John Cavanaugh is a current State Senator and candidate for Congress in Nebraska’s second Congressional District. Polling shows John has a 28 point lead in the Democratic primary. John is running to lower costs, protect healthcare and Social Security from the Trump Administration’s attacks, and fight corruption.
