Leading NE-02 Candidate John Cavanaugh Releases New Video Calling on Republicans to Fund Healthcare

50,000 Nebraskans Will Lose Coverage Entirely

Omaha, NE — Today, John Cavanaugh’s campaign released a video highlighting the healthcare story of an Omaha voter named Jennifer. Jennifer is a self-employed musician who buys her health insurance on the exchange and needs a double lung transplant. Because of Trump and Republicans, her and her husband’s health insurance premium will increase from $690 to $2,000 a month.

Watch HERE.

John Cavanaugh said: Jennifer, and so many other Nebraskans who are facing serious illnesses, should be focused on getting better, not worrying about how they’ll pay staggering medical bills — all because Republicans would rather give tax breaks to billionaires and big corporations. I’m running for Congress because people like Jennifer need Congress to fund the Affordable Care Act marketplace so that people have a chance to purchase healthcare at a cost they can afford. Unless we elect new leaders who put their constituents' health and wallets ahead of special interests, we’ll only see this healthcare crisis worsen.

Today, four Republicans joined House Democrats in signing a petition forcing Speaker Johnson to hold a vote on extending the Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies. The ACA funding bill is not expected to come to the floor before January, meaning the ACA healthcare funding will lapse for an estimated 22 million Americans who get their health insurance through the marketplace.

In addition, Nebraska Republicans are implementing Trump’s Medicaid cuts earlier than required. The workforce requirements are not expected to bring a meaningful amount of Nebraskans into the workforce, but will instead add a paperwork burden to low income families who are already working.

The combined result is that an estimated 50,000 people in Nebraska and 16,000 people in Nebraska’s Second Congressional District will lose healthcare coverage entirely. Thousands more will see their costs rise, and struggle to pay for insurance amidst growing unemployment and high everyday costs.

Democrat John Cavanaugh has made healthcare a focus of his congressional campaign. In an October op-ed in the Omaha World Herald, John called attention to the rising costs.

Polling shows John has a 21 point lead in the Democratic primary. In addition to focusing on healthcare, John is running to tackle the affordability crisis, protect Social Security, and fight corruption.
